Clemson University WWTP Awarded ACEC-SC 2025 Engineering Excellence Award

Awards

We are honored to announce that the Clemson University WWTP project has received a 2025 Engineering Excellence Award from ACEC-SC. This recognition highlights exceptional engineering accomplishments that prioritize innovation and value.

Harper, in collaboration with Black & Veatch, upgraded Clemson University’s wastewater treatment facility. The facility accommodates significant fluctuations in wastewater flow due to varying student populations and athletic events. Previously, the facility operated with two basins for the Sequential Batch Reactor (SBR), both of which needed to be online at all times. We addressed this by converting the two basins into four, allowing maintenance on one or two basins while keeping the plant operational.

In the first phase of the project, we installed a UV disinfection system, replacing a chlorine contact basin and eliminating the need for hazardous chemical storage. To maintain continuous operation, a temporary chemical feed system was developed until the UV system was operational. The second phase involved a crucial upgrade of the SBR, requiring one train to be shut down during minimal summer influent flows. This phase included extensive piping installation and construction of new walls, ultimately enhancing the SBR with an advanced aeration grid and additional components.

The emphasis on sustainability and responsiveness to client needs contributed to a successful partnership. The effective collaboration and ongoing communication between Clemson University, Black & Veatch, and Harper were key factors in achieving these results. We are thankful for the trust Clemson University has placed in us to upgrade their award-winning facility.
